Student Support
The College is trying to make sure that all learners can benefit from studying with us. Some people need extra help in order to make the best of their time at College. This section will give you basic information about the sort of support services we can offer and what you need to do to get this help.
We have teams of staff who can provide help with English and Maths skills; support students with mobility needs or disabilities; provide personal support for those with emotional or confidence issues, as well as the financial costs of coming to college. We can’t guarantee to provide everything you think you need but we will do our best to provide support fairly and reasonably.
If you think you need help to enable you to study, we want you to tell us as soon as you can. The College will give you a number of opportunities to let us know: at interview; at enrolment; during your course. The disclosure process gives learners a chance to tell us what they need and help us to work out what support services we can offer them. This is a voluntary disclosure – learners may choose not to disclose support issues. Any information given will be treated as confidentially as possible and only shared with other staff with the permission of the learner (unless other risk factors over-ride that need).
The type of information you might give us or we might ask you about include:
- Learning support needs
- Disability and/or health requirements
- Behavioural problems
- Family or personal issues
When you complete an application for a place on a full-time course, you will then be given an interview. During your interview the tutor will ask you to identify any particular support needs you may have. This will not affect your offer of a place.
During Enrolment at the Main Campus we will also invite all learners to complete an electronic on-line form which can be used to record any support needs. Adult Education and Community Outreach tutors will be using a similar paper form.
After the enrolment days, tutors will receive a report of the learner’s support needs. Tutors and Support teams will work in partnership to establish appropriate support for each identified learner. This may range from a simple “need to know” about a minor issue to a comprehensive support plan.
Part-time students will often have very different support needs to full-timers. All students are entitled to make use of the College’s support services and you should identify any particular needs to your tutor as soon as possible, or you can contact the specialist teams who provide the support services.
